What is Neera? what is its scope in India, especially in Kerala? are the first questions which come in our mind when we start to talk about Neera. Actually Neera is a natural drink which is used by people living in urban areas. Recently only some business minded people realized its huge economic possibilities. Here we are going to have some idea about Neera and its economic importance.
Neera is a sweet, white colored sap extracted from the immature inflorescence of coconut trees. It is a non-alcoholic drink which is high in nutritional values. Its production and marketing has huge potential in generating income in rural areas. Neera should not be confused with toddy. Neera contains no alcohol. But toddy is produced from Neera by fermentation and it contains alcohol. Neera is widely used in India,Sri Lanka,Malaysia,Indonesia,Africa such countries and is having good marketing potential there.
In India, especially in Kerala,Neera comes under Abkari Act.Which groups both Toddy and Neera as alcoholic beverages, which is an injustice to the lakhs of coconut farmers.Only because of this,Neera production and related industries came under Abkari act which retarded its growth. Now things started to change. Results of three pilot projects carried out by Kerala Agricultural University clearly states that the future of Coconut farmers clearly depends on how we are able to utilize the possibilities of Neera.
The study clearly states that if we are able to tap only 1% of the total coconut trees in Kerala,it can generate around 5400 crores of revenue. We can easily tap 10% of coconut trees without any extra efforts which can generate 54000 crores. If we can distribute this revenue among farmers across Kerala, then it will be a revolution in Kerala history. Neera is having such a huge potential. So we are going to discuss deeply about this business in coming posts.
