Kerala poultry farming sector after Avian Influenza

Ending of 2014 was not a good time for poultry farmers in south India especially those from Kerala and Tamil Nadu. The Avian flue reported in ducks of Kuttanad in Alappuzha district had adverse effect on their business.Kerala Government banned transportation of Birds and started culling of birds in that area which resulted in culling of over 2 Lakhs of birds and the poultry market went down. This resulted in accumulation of stocks in Tamil Nadu also and the poultry prices in both states went down. This was the story at the end of 2014 but now the situation slowly started to change.By the starting of 2015 what we can see is that the situation is under control and the demand and price of poultry products starting to rise.Kerala Government also decided to extend the financial assistance to all duck farmers who lost their birds due to Avian influenza. So the New year is better start for poultry sector. The recent incidents suggests the requirement of some steps that must be implemented in our poultry business. The are given below.

Safety measures

This is the urgent step that must taken care by all poultry farmers across India. The Influenza virus can affect any part of the world because the virus can be spread by migrating birds. So I suggest each every farmer need to use basic safety protective equips like gloves, masks etc and ensure neatness in your farm and take bath after you deal with your birds.Quarantine suspected birds in some other cells,Report any suspected incidents to nearby government agencies. This is very important for controlling the spreading of avian flue.

Financial

Be ready to handle any adverse condition both mentally and financially. The Avian flue can spread any part of India at any time. The report of bird flue always reduce the market demand and thus affect your business. This is a temporary phenomena only and once you go through this time you may face so much financial difficulties. After this phenomena, market restores and you will get good response from market. So be ready financially.

Restructure your business

The Avian influenza was an eye opener for many farmers that they were purely depended on poultry business sector.Once the sector got an impact, the all suffered. So I would suggest you to analyse your farming style and reduce your dependency on any particular sector and Diversify your business. You can approach nearby Government agencies for consultancy(Beware of private consultants).

Above are some basic measures that can help you to reduce the unexpected Impact of  Avian Influenza on your business. These steps can also help you to handle any other critical situation also.So I suggest you to think about it and If you have any suggestion please comment below...
