Scope of Precision farming in India

Precision farming
What is precision farming? What is the importance of precision farming in India?  what is its scope?
these are the questions which come into mind of a common farmer while hearing the term Precision farming. Precision farming is  the farming method evolved with the help of modern technologies which ensures effective utilization of resources in the farm land.It utilizes GPS technology effectively hence each and every parts of the land is taken care.Precision farming is aided by computer program and hence each and every data pertaining to the farm is available to the farmer.

Why Precision farming?

In India after green revolution, farmers and scientists realized the fact that the soil is contaminated by excessive use of fertilizers and pesticides. The natural fertility of soil is lost by the excessive usage of chemicals. The effective usage of water is not happening in the farming method used during Green revolution.Majority of water is wasted and the result is less efficient resource management.Precision farming is the best practice to solve such issues. It provides the best resource management methods to eliminate the wastage of resources and thus the pollution to soil and water can be reduced significantly.

Even though various modern farming techniques like drip irrigation, integrated pest management, planning of farm land,Soil fertility checking etc may come as part of precision farming, the real concept of precision farming is outside these domains. The real concept of precision farming is based on GPS.The Global Positioning System enables the farmers to be precise in terms of Time and Space.

How Precision farming work?

1)The GPS aided precision farming method enables farmer to divide the farm land to several small and equal parts.

2)Soil samples are collected by a tractor which is connected to GPS and computer. It collects soil samples from all divisions

2)Soil fertility is analysed and the result is uploaded to computer program. The program maps the fertility of each divisions accordingly a fertility map is prepared.

3)Fertilization is managed by program based on soil fertility map prepared.Computer program decides the quantity of fertilizer to be applied in each parts of the land. This helps in huge saving of cost for fertilization.

4)During harvest, the data is uploaded to computer program division wise. This helps in harvest mapping.

5)Watering is planned by program based on the water content in the soil.

6)The computer program automates almost all activities in the farm land. This helps in huge saving of labour.

7)Round the clock working of farm equipments is possible.Hence time is saved considerably.

Reducing the wastage of resources and increasing the efficiency of farming can help farmers to more revenue.Even though the cost of implementing precision farming is high,if you consider the benefits and the profits,it is cost effective.

Importance of Precision farming

Today, the conventional method of farming is less profitable in India.Low fertility of soil and increased farming cost makes farming very difficult and low profitable. But by using latest farming technologies like Precision farming,we can overcome such difficulties. Many new generation farmers got great results by adopting precision farming techniques. They utilized localized forms of Precision farming by implementing the concept of Precision farming in their own way. They got two to three times more profit compared to traditional farming. So in India, the poor growth rate of farming can be improved by adopting precision farming techniques.

Even though some farmers started to use precision farming methods, majority of farmers are still not aware about this technology and its implementation.Lack of knowledge is the main reason for the less popularity of Precision farming in India. The solution is to obtain more knowledge about this technology from the nearby Agricultural universities and from the people who already implemented this technology successfully. As more and more farmers start to implement precision farming, the profitability of farming sector will surely improve and efficient usage of resources will happen. This will result in better environment and food security. So it is time for us to have a detailed look at this technology which will be there in coming posts....

Precision farming

What is Precision farming? - 'Precision farming' is the term used to denote the farming practice which is fully based on accuracy. Its scope range  from GPS(Global Positioning System) to all modern farming technologies which enable the effective utilization of resources accurately. The GPS based system enable us to do effective field management and control of equipments based on satellite data.Other modern techniques like drip irrigation system help us for the effective utilization of resources.

Precision farming is the technique of effective utilization of resources with great accuracy and time.In this system everything is provided with great care.No wastage will occur. Thus it eliminates soil pollution and at the same time, reduces the farming cost. It increase the yield highly. Some farmers in Tamil Nadu got around 200 percent more production by utilizing precision farming. The main problem for utilizing this technology is the requirement of huge initial investment.Availability of latest technological equipments are also an issue. But by using the localized form of precision farming we can utilize available resources effectively.

Real Precision farming

Real form of precision farming is based on GPS. With GPS we can achieve be precise in terms of Time and Space. The GPS system is connected to a computer program.Farm equipments connected to this computer program. The program automates the farm activities with the help of GPS.

Since everything is done with great accuracy, wastage is nill. Also  round the clock working of farm equipments are possible.

Even though Precision farming equipments are costly, the amount of time and the resources it can save is very high.If you consider the cost of such resources and time, the cost of precision farming will be negligible.

Precision farming is cost effective if you have large area of farm land.By forming Farmers Associations, small scale farmers can also implement precision farming techniques in their farm.

To practice Precision farming in our farm,we need to know more about it.In coming posts,we will discuss more ...

Challenges faced by Turkey farmers in India

India is a great market for poultry products.Majority of Indian Meat consumption belongs to poultry meat. But the domination of chicken meat in the meat industry raises great challenges to other meat producers.Turkey farmers are the one of such meat producers affected by the domination of chicken meat in the industry. This is the same factor which decrease the growth and popularity of Turkey farming in India.Besides this, there are some other challenges faced by Turkey farmers.Let us discuss about them.

High cost of production

Even though some western countries manages to keep the cost of production at minimum,Indian farmers always experience the issue of high cost of production. The main reason behind it is the lack of researches and support from the poultry department. The lack of a specially optimized farming practice for Turkeys is also a reason.

Lack of support

Government and other agencies are not contributing for the development of Turkey farming in India. They are well concentrated on chicken farming. As the farmers are not getting training on Turkey farming,a well structured farming practice is not occurring in India.

Lack of popularity

As the Turkey farming is least popular in India, people are unaware of the products of it.So the market is always opened the other poultry products like chicken.Continuous efforts need to be taken to gain popularity  in Indian market

Professional Marketing

Western farms utilize the services of Marketing professionals for getting more and more sales. But in India,as this sector is not developed, farms can't utilize such services

Treatment of birds

How to setup a small scale turkey farm business

Turkey farming is not popular in India. But in US, nearly 25   crores  of  Turkeys are consumed annually . Studies reveals that Indian cooking style is well adapted with Chicken than Turkeys. But as a part of globalization,Turkey products are being introduced to India and more people are attracted to new tastes. The increasing demand for turkey meat in Restaurants and Hotels is the sure sign of the new trend in Indian food industry. To tap these new possibilities, the new generation farmers should be quite aware of Turkey farming.

To develop a small scale turkey farming,we should concentrate on few basic things.Below basic factors will help us to have a basic idea about them.

As the Turkeys are new to us and we don't have an experience on them,it is always advised to start with minimum investment along with our current job or farm.

The main things we need to concentrate are

Selection of Breeds

While starting a Turkey farm, the poult (baby turkey) should selected very carefully. It should be free from diseases and need to be from a good Turkey breed. The selection of breed depends up on the purpose of the farming. If we plan for Meat farm,we need to select the breed which will give more meat.If the plan is for breeding or egg sale,we should choose accordingly.

Infrastructure

The Infrastructure mainly depends up on mode of our farming. We can either go for intensive farming or free range farming. As a starter,it is better to choose free range farming. For free range farming, the infrastructure requirement is minimum.A normal wooden shelter is enough for this type of farming. The area around the farm should be protected well from predators and intruders.

Feeding

Some breeds of turkeys are selective in taking food. You should examine it carefully and feed them accordingly.Normally Turkeys eat all types of grains and food wastes. There should be plenty of pure water available all day. While doing free range farming,we don't have to worry much about feeding.

Disease prevention and farm maintenance

Chicken and Turkey have almost same type of disease resistance. So the prevention measures and treatments  for them are almost same.some common diseases which affect Turkeys most are arizonosis, blackhead disease, chronic respiratory disease etc.Farm should be maintained very neatly to avoid majority of these diseases.

Marketing

Marketing is the main headache for a Turkey farmer. As the industry is not well developed, the orders will be very less in the initial stage.Try to make contracts with main restaurants and hotels in city area.As our farm starts popularize,we will get more sales...

These are some brief descriptions only.A Turkey farmer may face more challenges while doing the business. To prevent unexpected loss,we should start at minimum investment and go for mixed farming....
